Can Cats Eat Avocado
Avocado is Not Safe for cats.
Cats are entirely carnivorous mammals, though we often find that some of these pets have developed an affinity towards this tasty fruit, and many owners even offering them the same. However, official pet health sites and experts do not support the idea of giving avocado to cats since it might prove poisonous to them, though not fatal.
How are avocados bad for cats
The avocado fruit, pits, bark, leaves and the plant itself are all potentially poisonous to cats, which is because of the presence of a chemical compound called ‘persin’ (a fungicidal toxin) in them, that is higher in the Guatemalan variety.
Therefore, when ingested in even a substantial amount, it can lead to accumulation of fluid in different parts of your cat’s body like the chest, lungs, abdomen, pancreas, and heart, resultantly putting its life at stake. However, the amount of toxin depends on how or when they were grown. Though, the lethal dose is not yet known and is awaiting further research.
Avocado also contains high fat, which can lead to pancreatitis.
Another physical danger with avocado associated to cats is accidentally swallowing the large pit, skin or the seed, which can easily cause blockage or obstruction in its esophagus, intestinal tract or stomach, also resulting in death in extreme cases.
